EVENTS
An evening of music was held at St John the Baptist Church on Saturday 24th April 2010 in aid of Church funds and CEO FM (a local charity supporting young musicians). We were entertained by the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir, Wheatley Park School Jazz Ensemble played two Dizzy Gillespie arrangements, Manteca and A Night In Tunisia and Isla and Lizzie Mundell-Perkins performed extracts from Bach’s double violin concerto. Isla and Lizzie come from a musical family and have both benefited hugely from participating in Oxfordshire music service activities.
- Wheatley Park School Jazz Ensemble
A recital of music for organ and oboe/cor anglais given by Estevan Ellul (oboe/cor anglais) and Kate Adcock (organ) was held at St John the Baptist on Saturday 11th September 2010. Kate and Estevan have given several recitals together. Estevan is the oboe specialist for Oxfordshire County Music Service, where Kate teaches the violin and viola. Estevan studied oboe at the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatorium in Palermo, where he performed with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra. He was oboist in the Maltese National Orchestra, then moved to Australia to play in the Australian Wind Orchestra and the Brisbane Sinfonia. Kate was organ scholar at Queen’s College, Oxford, where she read Classics and wrote a doctoral thesis on translation of Christian Greek texts into Arabic. She now plays the organ at St Andrew’s Church in Headington, Oxford. The recital included pieces by Telemann: Sonate in A minor, JS Bach: Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, G Rossini: Variations for Oboe and Organ, M Ravel: Pavane pour une Infante, JS Bach: Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, and G Donizetti: Concertino for Cor Anglais.
BURNS NIGHT SUPPER – Friday 28th January 2011. An enjoyable evening was held in the Village Hall to raise funds for the Church Fabric Appeal. Traditional haggis and swede were served followed by an array of tasty sweets. We were entertained by Tim Smith on the keyboard who played a mixture of classical tunes, the obligatory Auld Lang Syne and Skye Boat Song to sing along to, and encored with a toe tapping jazz tune.

WOMEN OF NOTE – SATURDAY 26TH MARCH 2011 – 7pm – St John the Baptist Church – An evening of song with Women of Note performing a selection of jazz standards by Gershwin, Kern & Hammerstein and other great songwriters. Tickets £10 to include free drink. Refreshments and raffle in the interval. Concert in aid of the church repair fund.
INTERNATIONAL HARPIST, ROBIN WARD - 4TH JUNE 2011 – ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH - Robin’s programmes contain a wide variety of music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, as well as music from Folk Traditions, with a combination of music originally written for the instrument and Robin’s own transcriptions. Originally from New Zealand, Robin is emerging as a soloist, as an exponent of the triple harp, and has performed throughout New Zealand, Austalia and the UK. Robin builds his own instruments, and is one of only a handful of professional triple harpists in the world.
